1786 Russia Leather Passport Holder
£545.00
This beautifully grained genuine ‘Russia’ leather passport cover, individually hand made and embossed with the year of the shipwreck, is perfect for the avid traveller. On one side there is a large pocket and two card slots, on the opposite side it has a pocket for your passport.
In 1973, this unique leather was discovered by divers on the shipwreck of the Metta Catharina, a Dutch cargo ship sailing from Russia with a cargo of reindeer hides. Perfectly preserved underwater, it is a beautiful example of the bygone Russian tanning technique. Cured in baths of rye or oat flour and yeast then hand embossed with varying styles of cross hatching before being soaked in seal oil and birch tan oil, this technique could never be replicated anywhere else in the world and is lost to this day.
